Bruce Davis is a general surgeon and author from Mesa, Arizona. He has published extensively in both Young Adult and Adult Science-Fiction, as well as publishing a non-fiction memoir of his medical career. He continues to practice medicine, write and appear as a speaker at various events and conventions.

Early Life

Education

Davis received his medical degree from the University of Illinois College of Medicine in Chicago. He completed his surgical residency at the Bethesda Naval Hospital.

Career

Medicine

Davis spent 14 years on active duty with the Navy, including time spent overseas and a tour of duty in the First Gulf War with the Marines.

After his military career, Davis opened a private practice as a solo general surgeon in Mesa, Arizona. He continues to practice medicine in addition to his writing career

Writing

Davis began writing in high school, which led to him finishing several novels before he began producing his published works. He was first published in 1996.

Davis describes his fiction as mostly ‘hard’ science-fiction, drawing inspiration both from classic fantasy/science-fiction novelists and detective/noir fiction.

In 2015, Davis published outside of the science-fiction genre with his book “Dancing in the Operating Room”, a non-fiction work that described experiences from his years as a trauma surgeon.

Podcast

Davis hosts the Brick Cave Podcast with fellow Brick Cave author Sharon Skinner. Davis and Skinner discuss various topics around literature and writing craft, as well as their own work and personal lives. The podcast also occasionally features discussions with other authors, Brick Cave staff and/or local community members.
